Counseling Services
Counseling Services for the ABE/GED student include:
• Scheduling and conducting intake/registrations for all prospective students
• Conducting orientations to the program, including policies, rules and responsibilities to all incoming and returning students
• Assisting students in identifying their educational, personal and career goals
• Reviewing goals on a regular basis to assure student focus and success
• Meeting with individual student as needed to address academic and/or personal issues that impact on their participation/progress in the program
• Providing students with information on career planning/transitioning to another program(e.g. Massasoit Community College’s Step Up to College Program, vocational training programs, the One Stop Career Centers and various on-line career development websites)
• Providing information on GED testing sites and testing dates
• Assessing the programmatic needs of students with identified disabilities in collaboration with the classroom teacher
• Providing information and referrals as needed
Counseling services for the ESOL student include:
• Helping students understand U.S. culture and resulting lifestyle changes
• Supporting students in everyday activities such as: obtaining a library card, getting a driver's license, meeting with the their children's teachers, helping children with their homework, registering to vote, and researching college opportunities for themselves and their children.
• Helping students learn about the immigration process, citizenship, applying for a green card. (We have an immigration lawyer come and speak to our students every year.)
• Providing guest speakers, for example, a nutritionist to talk about "the food pyramid", an American Red Cross volunteer to teach students how to handle emergency situations including calling 911, a local police officer to teach "rules of the road", a local Firefighter to teach "fire safety”, and representatives from the local bank to talk about investments, obtaining a mortgage, and improving credit.
• Workforce development training: We help students with the job search process including field trips to and seminars at the Department of Education and Training in Norwood. Writing cover letters, a resume, conducting an internet job search, researching a company, getting an interview, preparing for an interview, dressing for an interview...we cover it all!
